MYANMAR’S State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi will visit migrant workers in Mahachai again when she arrives in Thailand for an official visit this month.

The fate and well-being of millions of people from Myanmar who work in Thailand will be highlighted during her visit from June 23-25, Foreign Minister Don Pramuwinai said. Suu Kyi will visit a Myanmar community in Thailand but the location has not yet been fixed, he said.

However, Chiang Mai-based website The Irrawaddy reported that she would visit the fishing town of Mahachai in Samut Sakhon province, which is home to a large Myanmar migrant worker community.

Suu Kyi met migrant workers from Myanmar in Mahachai during a visit in 2012 when she spoke at the World Economic Forum in Bangkok. She also visited Mae La refugee camp in Mae Sot.

About 120,000 refugees - mainly ethnic Karen and others who fled conflict and repression at home - have lived in border camps in Thailand for more than 30 years. Tens of thousands more have been resettled abroad.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said yesterday that this country would help Myanmar carry out national reconciliation by "not supporting" minority groups to fight the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Army).

He stressed that Thai assistance would be what has been requested by Nay Pyi Taw and not according to a Thai agenda. "They asked us, so we have to help them," the PM said at his weekly news briefing. "We're not poking our noses in their [Myanmar] affairs," he said. "They have to operate their domestic things. Do you like when foreigners come to try to organise our conflicts and the referendum [process] in our country? Aren't you ashamed of that?"

A TOTAL OF 28 revellers were injured, one critically, shortly after a speedboat left a pier on Samet Island and slammed into a tugboat anchored off the coast of Rayong on Saturday night, police said yesterday.

เมื่อคนวันเสาร์ ตำรวจกล่าวว่านักท่องเที่ยวได้รับบาดเจ็บจำนวน 28 คนและหนึ่งคนอาการสาหัสเหตุเนื่องมาจากเรือสปีตโบ้ทออกจากเกาะเสม็ดพุ่งชนเรือลากจูงที่จอดทอดสมออยู่ในอ่าวจังหวัดระยอง

Twenty-three people were taken to Rayong Hospital, three to Bangkok-Rayong Hospital, and two to Sri Rayong Hospital.

The speedboat was carrying 35 people, 19 men and 16 women, and most were injured by the impact of the boats. One later needed to have a brain operation and another remained in a serious condition with cerebral haemorrhage. Others sustained head and facial injuries, broken ribs and shoulder bones.

The speedboat was taking the revellers back to the Rayong coast after attending the "7th Samet In Love" concert on Samet Island. The boat collided with the tugboat only five minutes after it left the pier.

Chatchawal Panngern, 25, said he was sitting in the front of the boat and saw what happened clearly. He said the driver apparently did not see the tugboat which was moored about a kilometre offshore without lights on.

More than 20,000 revellers had come to Koh Samet to join in the concert organised to boost tourism and income for the locals. The concert started at 4pm on Saturday and wound up at 3am on Sunday. All resort rooms on the island were fully occupied because of the event.

Rayong Deputy Governor Montri Thanachaiwiboonwat called officials to discuss the cause of the accident. He was told the initial investigation found that the speedboat hit the tugboat that had been anchored after transporting concert equipment to the island.

Peerathorn Naksuk, Rayong habour specialist, said harbour laws stated that a speedboat could not take more than 40 people. He said this boat had 35 passengers on board and all had lifejackets.

He suspected the accident occurred because the boat was riding a high wave and the driver could not see the moored tugboat.

Sangket Rattanapanya, the boat owner, and Winai Trakulpong, its driver, were summoned for questioning. The driver said he could not see the tugboat because it was dark and raining. He said he was driving the boat at 30 kilometres per hour.

ALL 137 tigers at Wat Pa Luang Ta Mahabua, better known as the ‘Tiger Temple’, in Kanchanaburi’s Saiyok district will be moved to a new home tomorrow (May 30), provincial governor Sak Somboonto said yesterday.

Sak spoke after a meeting at City Hall with the officials from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation's Protected Area Regional Office 3 (Ban Pong) to prepare transport for the tigers.

Fifteen girls escaped without injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Some of the students were still not asleep when the fire broke out and were able to raise the alarm, said Rewat Wassana, manager of the Pithakkaiat Witthaya School, to which the dorm is attached.

“We have a teacher who sleeps with the girls in the dorm. She tried to help the students escape,” Rewat said.

A police official said that besides the 18 dead, another five girls were injured, including two in serious condition. He said two of the bodies were so badly burned they were unidentifiable. Haruhisa Saito, 52, sustained broken ribs and head injuries after being struck by Thon Buri-Nam Tok train No 257 on the bridge in Muang district, said Pol Lt Wichai Srimuangthanachai, a deputy tourist police inspector in Kanchanaburi province. The incident was reported at 11.25am on Saturday.

Police rushed to the scene and found the train stopped on the track. The injured man had already been sent to a nearby hospital.

While he was taking a selfie, he did not notice the train coming behind him. The train kept whistling, but he failed to hear it. When the train struck him, the impact threw him from the bridge to the ground about five metres below. Around 1,000 Thai and foreign tourists were visiting the area and many screamed in panic.

A massive search is continuing for a second day for an EgyptAir plane that disappeared over the Mediterranean.

Greek, Egyptian, French and UK military units are taking part in the operation near Greece's Karpathos island.

Flight MS804 was en route from Paris to Cairo with 66 passengers and crew when it vanished early on Thursday.

Greece said radar showed the Airbus A320 had made two sharp turns and dropped more than 25,000ft (7,620m) before plunging into the sea.

Egypt says the plane was more likely to have been brought down by a terrorist act than a technical fault.

Most of the people on board Flight MS804 were from Egypt and France. A Briton was also among the passengers.

Initial reports late on Thursday, based on Egyptian officials' comments that wreckage had been found, later proved unfounded.

Greece's lead air accident investigator Athanasios Binis said items including lifejackets found near Karpathos were not from the Airbus A320.

"An assessment of the finds showed that they do not belong to an aircraft," he said.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has ordered the country's civil aviation ministry, army-run search-and-rescue centre, navy and air force to take all necessary measures to locate the wreckage.

The French air accident investigation bureau has despatched three investigators, along with a technical adviser from Airbus, to join the Egyptian inquiry.
